Title: National Democratic Republican Nomination, 1840 Description: A campaign broadside for Democratic candidates Martin Van Buren and Richard Johnson, produced for the presidential election of 1840. It is illustrated with: 1) a vignette of the American eagle in a halo of stars, clutching arrows and an olive branch, and draped with a banderole on which appears the motto: "Liberty & Equality"; 2) half-length portraits of Johnson and Van Buren; 3) episodes in Johnson's military campaigns against the Indians during the War of 1812, including the Battle of the Horse Shoe, the Battle of the Thames, and "Col. Johnson charging." The lengthy text provides biographical information on the candidates and names former Presidents Jefferson, Madison, Washington, and Jackson as Van Buren's outstanding Democratic predecessors.
